Effect of reed root extract(RRE) on learning and memory impairment animal model SAMP8 - ¥°.Feeding effect of RRE on lipid metabolism of SAMP8

Abstract
Female senescence-accelerated mouse(SAM) P8 as a learning and memory impairments animal model were fed experimental diets with reed root extract(RRE : Phragmites communis) of 250 §·/§¸ BW for 8 months. Feeding effects of RRE on changes in body weight, changes in triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, atherogenic index(AI), hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxide(LPO) levels and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity in serum of SAMP8 were evaluated. Body weight, triglyceride(TG) level were slightly decreased by administration of RRE compared with control group, but there were no significant differences in administered groups of RRE. Administrations of RRE resulted in a significant decreases in total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels(about 15%, respectively) compared with control group, but HDL-cholesterol levels and atherogenic index were no significant differences in administerd groups of RRE, Hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxide(LPO) levels significantly decreased in 25% and 20%, respectively by administration of RRE and superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity in RRE groups remarkably increased to 65% compared with control group. These results suggest that lipid metabolism such as lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxide(LPO) levels and higher superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity in serum of SAMP8 by administration of RRE may be effectively resulted in a lower chronic degenerative diseases and a greater antiaging effects.
